There i a hill near my home that I often climb at night. The noie of the city i a far-off murmur. In the huh of dark I hare the cheerfulne of cricket and the confidence of owl. But it i the drama of the moonrie that I come to ee. For that retore in me a quiet and clarity that the city pend too freely.

From thi hill I have watched many moon rie. Each one had it own mood. There have been broad, confident harvet moon in autumn; hy, mity moon in pring; lonely, white winter moon riing into the utter ilence of an ink-black ky and moke-mudged orange moon over the dry field of ummer. Each, like fine muic, excited my heart and then calmed my oul.

But we, who live indoor, have lot contact with the moon. The glare of treet light and the dut of pollution veil the night ky. Though men have walked on the moon, it grow le familiar. Few of u can ay what time the moon will rie tonight.

Still, it tug at our mind.

If we unexpectedly encounter the full moon, huge and yellow over the horizon, we are helple but to tare back at it commanding preence. And the moon ha gift to betow upon thoe who watch.

I learned about it gift one July evening in the mountain. My car had myteriouly talled, and I wa tranded and alone. The un had et, and I wa watching what eemed to be the bright-orange glow of a foret fire beyond a ridge to the eat. Suddenly, the ridge itelf eemed to burt into flame. Then, the riing moon, huge and red and grotequely mihapen by the dut and weat of the ummer atmophere, loomed up out of the wood. Ditorted thu by the hot breath of earth, the moon eemed ill-tempered and imperfect. Dog at nearby farmhoue barked nervouly, a if thi trange light had wakened evil pirit in the weed.

But a the moon lifted off the ridge it gathered firmne and authority. It complexion changed from red, to orange, to gold, to impaive yellow. It eemed to draw light out of the darkening earth, for a it roe, the hill and valley below grew dimmer. By the time the moon tood clear of the horizon, full-cheted and round and of the colour of ivory, the valley were deep hadow in the landcape. The dog, reaured that thi wa the familiar moon, topped barking. And all at once I felt a confidence and joy cloe to laughter.

The drama took an hour. Moonrie i low and erried with ubtletie. To watch it, we mut lip into an older, more patient ene of time.

To watch the moon move inflexibly higher i to find an unuual tillne within ourelve. Our imagination become aware of the vat ditance of pace, the immenity of the earth and the huge improbability of our own exitence. We feel mall but privileged.

Moonlight how u none of life’ harder edge. Hillide eem ilken and ilvery, the ocean till and blue in it light. In moonlight we become le calculating, more drawn to our feeling.
