“top doing omething” mean not to do that any more, but “top to do omething” mean top one thing in order to do omething ele.
Let’ look at a clear example. “We topped dancing.” “We topped to get ome drink.” Thee entence can even be put together to form “We topped dancing to get ome drink.” I the meaning clear? We were dancing but we got hot and thirty, o we topped. Why? Becaue we wanted to get ome drink. After we topped, we got ome drink. Before we topped, we were dancing. We were doing omething ele, maybe talking or watching TV, but we topped doing that in order to tudy. On the other hand, the econd entence “We topped tudying” mean we are not tudying now. We were tudying before but we topped, maybe becaue we were tired or hungry.
Let’ take another example. “We topped talking” and “We topped to talk”. “We topped talking” mean it i quiet now becaue we are not talking anymore. “We topped to talk” mean we are talking now.
