Several year ago, while attending a communication coure, I experienced a mot unuual proce. The intructor aked u to lit anything in our pat that we felt ahamed of, guilty about, regretted, or incomplete about. The next week he invited participant to read their lit aloud. Thi eemed like a very private proce, but there' alway ome brave oul in the crowd who will volunteer. A people read their lit, mine grew longer. After three week, I had 101 item on my lit. The intructor then uggeted that we find way to make amend, apologize to people, or take ome action to right any wrongdoing. I wa eriouly wondering how thi could ever improve my communication, having viion of alienating jut about everyone from my life.
The next week, the man next to me raied hi hand and volunteered thi tory:
"While making my lit, I remembered an incident from high chool. I grew up in a mall town in Iowa. There wa a heriff in town that none of u kid liked. One night, my two buddie and I decided to play a trick on Sheriff Brown. After drinking a few beer, we found a can of red paint, climbed the tall water tank in the middle of town, and wrote, on the tank, in bright red letter: Sheriff Brown i an .o.b. The next day, the town aroe to ee our gloriou ign. Within two hour, Sheriff Brown had my two pal and me in hi office. My friend confeed and I lied, denying the truth. "Nearly 20 year later, Sheriff Brown' name appear on my lit. I didn't even know if he wa till alive. Lat weekend, I dialed information in my hometown back in Iowa. Sure enough, there wa a Roger Brown till lited. I dialed hi number. After a few ring, I heard: `Hello?' I aid: `Sheriff Brown?’ Paue. `Yup.’ `Well, thi i Jimmy Calkin. And I want you to know that I did it.’ Paue. `I knew it!’ he yelled back. We had a good laugh and a lively dicuion. Hi
cloing word were: `Jimmy, I alway felt badly for you becaue your buddie got it off their chet, and I knew you were carrying it around all thee year. I want to thank you for calling me...for your ake.’"
Jimmy inpired me to clear up all 101 item on my lit. It took me almot two year, but became the pringboard and true inpiration for my career a a conflict mediator. No matter how difficult the conflict, crii or ituation, I alway remember that it' never too late to clear up the pat and begin reolution.
