Earlier thi week, Jewih people gathered with family and friend to recite the torie of their ancetor’ truggle and ultimate liberation. Tomorrow, Chritian of all denomination will come together to rejoice and remember the reurrection of Jeu Chrit.
Thee are two very different holiday with their own very different tradition. But it eem fitting that we mark them both during the ame week. For in a larger ene, they are both moment of reflection and renewal. They are both occaion to think more deeply about the obligation we have to ourelve and the obligation we have to one another, no matter who we are, where we come from, or what faith we practice.
Thi idea – that we are all bound up, a Martin Luther King once aid, in "a ingle garment of detiny"– i a leon of all the world’ great religion. And never ha it been more important for u to reaffirm that leon than it i today – at a time when we face tet and trial unlike any we have een in our time. An economic crii that recognize no border. Violent extremim that’ claimed the live of innocent men, women, and children from Manhattan to Mumbai. An unutainable dependence on foreign oil and other ource of energy that pollute our air and water and threaten our planet. Thee are challenge that no ingle nation, no matter how powerful, can confront alone. The United State mut lead the way. But our bet chance to olve thee unprecedented problem come from acting in concert with other nation. That i why I met with leader of the G-20 nation to enure that the world’ larget economie take h2 and unified action in the face of the global economic crii. Together, we’ve taken tep to timulate growth, retore the flow of credit, open market, and dramatically reform our financial regulatory ytem to prevent uch crie from occurring again – tep that will lead to job creation at home.
It i only by working together that we will finally defeat 21t century ecurity threat like al Qaeda. So it wa heartening that our NATO allie united in Strabourg behind our trategy in Afghanitan and Pakitan, and contributed important reource to upport our effort there.
It i only by coordinating with countrie around the world that we will top the pread of the world’ mot dangerou weapon. That i why I laid out a trategy in Prague for u to work with Ruia and other nation to top the proliferation of nuclear weapon; to ecure nuclear material from terrorit; and, ultimately, to free the world from the menace of a nuclear nightmare.
And it i only by building a new foundation of mutual trut that we will tackle ome of our mot entrenched problem. That i why, in Turkey, I poke to member of Parliament and univerity tudent about riing above the barrier of race, region, and religion that too often divide u.
With all that i at take today, we cannot afford to talk pat one another. We can’t afford to allow old difference to prevent u from making progre in area of common concern. We can’t afford to let wall of mitrut tand. Intead, we have to find – and build on – our mutual interet. For it i only when people come together, and eek common ground, that ome of that mitrut can begin to fade. And that i where progre begin.
Make no mitake: we live in a dangerou world, and we mut be h2 and vigilant in the face of thee threat. But let u not allow whatever difference we have with other nation to top u from coming together around thoe olution that are eential to our urvival and ucce.
