　　Facing this audience on the stage, I have the exciting feeling ofparticipating in the march of history, for what we are facing today is more thana mere competition or contest. It is an assembly of some of China's mosttalented and motivated people, representatives of a younger generation that arepreparing themselves for the coming of a new century.

　　I'm grateful that I've been given this opportunity, at such a historicmoment, to stand here as a spokesman of my generation and to take a serious lookback at the past 15 years, a crucial period for every one of us and for thisnation as well.

　　Though it is only within my power to tell about my personal experience, andonly a tiny fragment of it at that, it still represents, I believe, the root ofa spirit which has been essential to me and to all the people bred by the past15 years.

　　In my elementary years, there was a little girl in the class who workedvery hard but somehow could never do satisfactorily in her lessons.

　　The teacher asked me to help her, and it was obvious that she expected alot from me. but as a young boy, restless, thoughtless, I always tried to evadeher so as to get more time to enjoy myself.

　　One day before the final exam, she came up to me and said, "Could youplease explain this to me? I want very much to do better this time. " I startedexplaining, and finished in a hurry. Pretending not to notice her still confusedeyes, I ran off quickly. Nat surprisingly, she again did very badly in the exam.And two months later, at the beginning of the new semester, word came of herdeath of blood cancer. No one ever knew about the little task I failed tofulfill, but I couldn't forgive myself. I simply couldn't forget her eyes, whichseem to be asking, "Why didn't you do a little more to help me, when it was soeasy for you? Why didn't you understand a little better the trust placed in you,so that I would not have to leave this world in such pain and regret?"

　　I was about eight or nine years old at that time, but in a way it was thevery starting point of my life, for I began to understand the word"responsibility" and to learn to always do my duties faithfully and devotedly,for the implications of that sacred word has dawned on me: the mutual need andtrust of people, the co-operation and inter-reliance which are the veryfoundation of human society.

　　Later in my life, I continued to experience many failures. But never againdid I feel that regret which struck me at the death of the girl, for it makes myheart satisfied to think that I have always done everything in my power tofulfill my responsibilities as best I can.

　　As I grew up, changed and improved by this incident and many other similarones, I began to perceive the changes taking place around me and to find thatsociety, in a way, was in its formative years like myself. New buildings, newcommodities and new fashions appear every day.

　　New ideas, new information, new technologies. People can talk with eachother from any corner of the earth in a matter of seconds. Society is becomingmore competitive.

　　Words like inpiduality and creativity are getting more emphasis and morepeople are rewarded for their hard work and efforts. Such is the era in whichthis generation ,grows and matures.

　　Such is the era in which this generation will take over the nation from ourfathers and learn to run it. Yet in the meantime, many problems still exist.

　　We learn that crimes take place in broad daylight with crowds of peoplelooking on and not assisting. We hear that there are still about 1 millionchildren in this country who can't even afford to go to elementary schools whileenormous sums of money are being squandered away on dinner parties and luxurycars.

　　We buy shoddy medicines, or merely worthless junk in the name of medicines,that aggravate, rather than alleviate our diseases since money, many peoplebelieve, is the most important thing in the world that must be made, even at theexpense of morality and responsibility.

　　Such an era, therefore, determines that we are a generation with a keenersense of competition and efficiency and a greater readiness to think criticallyand act creatively.

　　Such an era, furthermore, demands, that we are a generation with a clearperception of our historical responsibility and an aggressive will to takeaction and solve the problems. History has long been preparing these qualitiesin this generation and it is now calling us forward to give testimony to ourpatriotism and heroism towards this nation and all humanity.

　　Standing here now, I think of the past 15 years of my life as an ordinarystudent. Probably I'll be an ordinary man for the rest of my life. But thisdoesn't discourage me any, for I know that with my sense of responsibility anddevoted efforts to always strive, for the best, it's going to be a meaningfuland worthwhile life that I will be living.

　　Standing here now, I think of the past 15 years of this nation, which hasachieved greatness that inspired millions of people of my age, most of whom willnot attain fame or prestige and only a few of whom will be remembered byposterity. But that doesn't discourage us any, because we know that the worldwatches, the world listens, the world is waiting to see where this nation willbe heading in a time of rich opportunities and fierce competition.

　　I can't ever forget that little girl in my class who couldn't had the sameopportunities as any of us here to enjoy a wonderful life today and a hopefulworld tomorrow.

　　It is the sacred responsibility of this generation to face up to thechallenges of the new century and to devote our sweat and blood, our wisdom andpassion, to the historic cause of making this nation a greater and happier landfor every one of us.

　　We are not going to evade that responsibility. We are going to let peopledown. And people, far and near, will hear of us. Frost will be brought to theirbackbones and tears to their eyes when our stories are told and retold, So letus go forth, my fellow members of this luckily chosen generation, and meet thenew century in victory and glory.

　　now collegelife has been about more than a half, i begin to understand thatcollege is a large stage, what belongs to your own; here you are both directorand actor, if you dare to try, then the spotlight will call to you all. and whatyou have to do is try your best to play your role, whatever happens, believeyourself, that's right! when sophomore, is mainly for learning, without fresh atthe beginning, holding the muddled attitudes of life and learning. now recallingthe university life of freshman: classes, dinners, rest filled up my daily life,i am busy and i think i tried to make my life colorful ,however, i got noachievement to show off,i don’t know what i was busy with. people always likedream, but the dream is broken again and again when there is no plan to make itcome true. so it is the most important to have a plan for your university life,although it need not to be very detailed, it can let you have the target topursue.

　　some say mediocre students are similar, not mediocre students each havetheir own glory. although i don't think my life is brilliant, and failure ofcomparison but i'm glad i gain　much more than i lost. every one of us dreams ofthe university halls, in order to come to the palace we experience hardships.now that we have crossed the threshold, so we have a lot of personality in thehalls of this dream. college is not a fantasy, not a dream, and certainly notdelusional, but our great ideal. as long as we are fighting for. some day wewill achieve everything! you will hear maple stream boat, you will see kimlaughs, and you'll smell the fruit fragrance, because you have been in theharvest season!

　　look! there is a rainbow! on the first day of my university life, when iwalked into the campus, there was a rainbow bridging over the fountain, i hadn’tseen rainbow for a long time. i was so excited, and leaped high with joy. myponytail danced with my happiness. it was a propitious sign indicated that mylife in university would be colorful, and actually it is!

　　after my entry into university, i found my life so busy. what i should dois not only gaining the scholarship but also being a good monitor and leader ofshanghai university percussion band. i got the 1st and 2nd price of scholarshipin my 2 years of study. i organized charity donations for schoolmates withfinancial difficulty or disease. every week, i give drum lesson to new membersof our percussion band. and there are always a lot of non-business performances,such as entertaining guests, celebrating party, cultural exchange with foreignstudents delegations and their bands. of course, part-time job is indispensablein my vacations. i ask for no payment but aim at getting accustomed to thesociety.

　　sometimes, my friends advise me not to tire myself out with such a tightschedule. i wake up before the rooster crow, and continue working till very latewhen others are enjoying their sweet dreams. every time i come back from therehearsal of percussion band, i have to finish my homework with the help of myown charged light because of the blackout in out dormitory. maybe such kind oflife is something like an ascetic, but we should work hard and try hard in ouryouth, aren’t we?

　　when i represented shanghai university to take part in the pond’s newcentury lady competition held in may, when i show off on the stage, when iemerged as “the girl of vitality”, i made use of every bit of time to compensatethe classes i had missed, i made use of every chance to learn from other girlswith vitality, versatility and intelligence, i made use of this opportunity topresent our university students’ state of mind.
