College Preure

I ee two kind of preure working on college tudent today: economic preure, parental preure. It i eay to look around for rebel — to blame the college for charging too much money, the parent for puhing them too far. But there are no rebel, only victim.

The preure i heavy on tudent who jut want to graduate and get a job. If I were an employer I would rather employ graduate who have thi range and curioity than thoe who narrowly purued afe ubject and high grade. I know incalculable tudent whoe inquiring mind cheer me. I like to hear the play of their idea. I don’t know if they are getting A or C, and I don’t care. I alo like them a people. The country need them, and they will find atifying job. I tell them to relax, but they can’t.

Nor can I blame them. They live in a brutal economy. Today it i not unuual for a tudent, even if he work part time at college and full time during the ummer, to increae to 5, 000 in loan after graduation.Encouraged at commencement to go forth into the world, he i already behind a he goe forth. How could he not feel under preure throughout college to prepare for thi day of reckoning①?

Along with economic preure goe parental preure. Inevitably, the two are deeply integrated.

Poor tudent! They are caught in one of the oldet web of love and duty and guilt. The parent mean well: they are trying to teer their on and daughter toward a ecure future. But the on and daughter want to major in hitory or claic or philoophy—ubject with no “practical” value. Where’ the payoff on the humanitie? It’ not eay to peruade uch loving parent that the humanitie do indeed pay off. The intellectual facultie developed by tudying ubject like hitory and claic are jut the facultie that make creative leader in buine or almot any general field.[由wwW.HaoZuoWen.com整理]

Luckily for me, mot of them got into their field by an indirect route, to their urprie, after many roundabout way. They can hardly conceive of a career that wa not preplanned. They can hardly imagine allowing the hand of God or chance to nudge them down ome unforeeen trail.
