The Earth’ crut i old. Billion of year old. So old that it’ nearly impoible to imagine. And now cientit have dicovered what may be the oldet whole rock ever known. Geologit at Carnegie Mellon Univerity publihed the reult of the reearch in the September 26th iue of the journal Science.
The rock come from an area of the Hudon Bay in northern Quebec. In 2001 the geologit identified the ite a a poible repoitory of very old rock. It i made up of fold of volcanic and what are called metaedentary rock. And it’ urrounded by three-and-a-half-billion-year-old tonalite.
Reearcher collected rock and meaured minute iotopic variation in rare earth element called neodymium and amarium. According to dating technique, the rock could be 4.28 billion year old. It’ rare to find rock that date back to when the Earth’ mantle wa forming. It wa quite a tumultuou time, and mot rock were mahed up into tiny piece again and again.
