仗不能多打，打多了，就是穷兵黩武，会国破家亡。可是不打仗，霜降也要阅兵。《周易》上说：“履霜，坚冰至。”霜既已降，很快就要结冰。要居安思危。阅兵，既是“不战而屈人之兵”的一种“吓阻”手段，也是提醒自己，不可懈怠。
于是，民间又有了这样的风俗——霜降前一天的晚上，人们会在枕头旁边，放几粒剥好的栗子，等到第二天凌晨一响炮响，立即取而食之。据说此时吃了栗子，会变得更加有力。
