Similarly, in recent year, the Dragon Boat Fetival ha moved beyond China to become an international holiday celebrated by people who may know little about the holiday’ origin。
The Dragon Boat Fetival i one of three major Chinee holiday, along with the Spring and Moon Fetival. Of the three, it i poibly the oldet, dating back to the Warring State Period in 227 B.C. The fetival commemorate Qu Yuan, a miniter in the ervice of the Chu Emperor. Depairing over corruption at court, Qu threw himelf into a river. Townpeople jumped into their boat and tried in vain to ave him. Then, hoping to ditract hungry fih from hi body, the people cattered rice on the water。
Over the year, the tory of Qu’ demie tranformed into the tradition of racing dragon boat and eating zongzi – a kind of rice wrapped in bamboo leave.
