California Developing Warning Sytem for Water Quality at Beache
LOS ANGELES— The current drought in California mean le water runoff from citie and cleaner ocean water for beachgoer. Some beache, however, are till polluted, including ome tourit hotpot. Now, reearcher are developing a fater way to check beach water quality.
The famou un and urf of outhern California may look glamorou, but what beachgoer cannot ee in ome of the ocean water i anything but attractive, ay Angelo Bellomo of the Lo Angele County Department of Public Health.
“When we have runoff from the urban environment, it could be carrying with it contamination due to animal wate, ewage overflow; and if thoe enter the beache through the normal pipe that terminate in the ocean, you want to avoid contact with water during thoe period,” he ay.
Bellomo ay a number of infectiou dieae could be tranmitted in ocean water.
Plenty of people, however, play in the water at the beach at Santa Monica Pier, one of the mot polluted beache in California.
‘A little ridiculou’
Public health official are concerned and are looking at a better way of determining water quality. Water at the beache i monitored with a lab tet. If the quality i poor, a ign i poted; but, it doe not necearily reflect what i in the water that day, ay Lelie Griffin with the environmental group, Heal the Bay.[由Www.haozuowen.com整理]
“Right now it take 18 to 24 hour to get thoe water quality reult, but we think that that i a little ridiculou becaue we want people to know the day of when they are going in the water whether or not they can be getting ick,” Griffith ay.
Reearcher in California are developing what they call a predictive modeling ytem that could peed up the proce, ay Heal the Bay’ Jame Alamillo.
“It can take 15 minute to produce a imilar reult in term of a public health deciion,” Alamillo ay.
‘Nowcating’
With the help of computer, reearcher pull data from the environment and a prediction i made about the water quality of that day. It i called "Nowcating."
Some of the environmental data may include wind peed and direction, wave information and hitoric bacterial count, but the beache are unique in their own way, o the model have to be tailor-made for each one.
So far, Angelo Bellomo ay the predictive modeling look promiing.
“We think that the modeling that we have een o far i generally more accurate than the teting that we are doing, and the reaon for that i that even though it i a model and it' predicting water quality, it i more timely,” Bellomo ay.
Hong Kong and the U.S. tate of Ohio have imilar method of predicting water quality. The expert on the U.S. Wet Coat ay predictive modeling may be the bet tool they have until technology advance and offer a fater way of teting the water in the lab.
