In 1186, in the Jin Dynaty, the Fragrant Hill Temple wa built and terrace, pavilion and pagoda were added by the ubequent dynatie. The area wa later converted into a park and wa named the Park of Tranquility and Pleaure.
Along with Yuanmingyuan and the Surmmer Palace, the park wa twice detroyed in 1860 and in 1900. Then the eed urvived, and a year paed they grew into a lovely foret. Another tory goe that the umac were tranplanted to the area by Emperor Qianlong (l736-l795) of the Qing Dynaty. In November, the froted leave of thee tree, along with the perimmon and maple, pread over the Fragrant Hill like a thick red blanket. Spectacle Lake
Built in l745, the Spectacle Lake actually conit of two pond eparated and panned by a tone bridge. When the water reflect the unlight, the twin lake reemble a pair of pectacle, hence the name. Studio of Tranquil Heart
It wa firt built in mid-16th century under the Ming and wa recontructed in the Qing period. In the encloure there i a large emi-circular pool in the hape of a heart. The tudio wa burned down in 1860 and wa renovated after 1949.
Bright Temple
Lying to the outh of the Studio of Tranquil Heart, the Bright Temple wa built in 1780 a a reidence for the Sixth Bainqen Erdeni when he viited Beijing. The compound ha a 10-metre-high red terrace in Tibetan tyle. It wa detroyed by the Anglo-French troop in 1860.
