Life on earth depend on water,and there i no ubtitute for it. The current aumption i that our baic need for water-whether for drinking, agriculture, indutry or the raiing of fih--will alway have to be met. Given that premie, there are two baic route we can go. more equitable acce to water or more dratic engineering olution. Looking at the engineering olution firt, a lot of my reearch concentrate on what happen to wetland when you build dam in river bain, particularly in Africa. The ecology of uch area i almot entirely driven by the eaonal change of the river--the pule of the water. And the fact i that if you build a dam, you generally wreck the downtream ecology. In the pat, uch problem have been hidden by a lack of information. But in the next century, government will have no excue for their bliful ignorance. The engineer ability to control water flow ha created new kind of unpredictability too. 'Dam in Africa have meant fewer fih, le grazing and le floodplain agriculture--none of which were anticipated. And their average economic life i aumed to be thirty year. Dam don't exit for ever, but what will replace them i not clear. The key iue in any dicuion of water i money. To talk about a water crii hide intractable problem uch a poverty. Conider the problem of water upply in Mexico City or Delhi. If you' re rich, you drink mineral water and may even have a wimming-pool--yet million in uch citie can't get afe drinking water. People talk about the coming water crii. I believe we have one now.
