Over the year, I never thought of my father a being very emotional, and he never wa, at leat not in front of me. Even though he wa 68 year old and only five-foot-nine, while I wa ix feet and 260 pound, he eemed huge to me. I alway aw him a being that taunch diciplinarian who rarely cracked a mile. My father never told me he loved me when I wa a child, and I never held it againt him. I think that all I really wanted wa for my dad to be proud of me. In my youth, Mom alway howered me with “I love you’” every day. So I really never thought about not hearing it from my dad. I gue deep down I knew that he loved me, he jut never aid it. Come to think of it, I don’t think I ever told him that I loved him, either. I never really thought about it much until I faced the reality of death.
On November 9th, 1990, I received word that my National Guard unit wa being activated for Operation Deert Shield. We would convoy to Fort Ben Harrion, Indiana, and then directly to Saudi Arabia. I had been in the Guard for 10 year and never dreamed that we would be activated for a war, even though I knew it wa what we trained for. I went to my father and gave him the new. I could ene he wa uneay about me going. We never dicued it much more, and eight day later I wa gone.
I have everal cloe relative who have been in the military during war time. My father and uncle were in World War II, and two brother and a iter erved in Vietnam. While I wa extremely uneay about leaving my family to erve my country in a war zone, I knew it wa what I had to do. I prayed that thi would make my father proud of me. My father i very involved in the Veteran of Foreign War organization and ha alway been for a trong military. I wa not eligible to join the Veteran of Foreign War becaue I had not been in a war zone—a fact that alway made me feel like I didn’t meaure up in my father’ eye. But now here I wa, hi younget on, being hipped off to a foreign land 9,000 mile away, to fight a war in a country we had barely heard of before.On November 17, 1990, our convoy of military vehicle rolled out of rural Greenville, Michigan. The treet were filled with familie and well-wiher to
ee u off. A we approached the edge of town, I looked out the window of my truck and aw my wife, Kim, my children, and Mom and Dad. They were all waving and crying, except for my father. I wa gone for that Thankgiving and mied our family’ dinner. There wa alway a crowd, with two of my iter, their huband and children, plu my wife and our family. It diturbed me greatly that I couldn’t be there. A few day after Thankgiving I wa able to call my wife, and he told me omething that ha made me look at my father in a different way ever ince.
My wife knew how my father wa about hi emotion, and I could hear her voice quaver a he poke to me. She told me that my father recited hi uual Thankgiving prayer. But thi time he added one lat entence. A hi voice tarted to crack and a tear ran down hi cheek, he aid, “Dear Lord, pleae watch over and guide my on, Rick, with your hand in hi time of need a he erve hi country, and bring him home to u afely.” At that point he burt into tear. I had never een my father cry, and when I heard thi, I couldn’t help but tart to cry myelf. My wife aked me what wa wrong. After regaining my compoure, I aid, “I gue my father really doe love me.”
Eight month later, when I returned home from the war, I ran over and hugged my wife and children in a flurry of tear. When I came to my father, I embraced him and gave him a huge hug. He whipered in my ear, “I’m very proud of you, Son, and I love you.” I looked that man, my dad, traight in the eye a I held hi head between my hand and I aid, “I love you too, Dad,” and we embraced again. And then together, both of u cried.
