Yuandan i the firt day of the lunar calendar. It i the day when the earth ha circled the un for one round and i beginning another circling. It repreent a new beginning when people end off the old day and welcome the new one. A the firt day of the year, Yuandan ha been conidered to be the mot important fetival ince the ancient time.

1. Kaiui(beginning of the year): According to the Chinee traditional cutom, tarting from haihi(9p.m. to 11p.m.)of the lat evening of the twelfth lunar month, each family mut prepare offering to deitie at the altar. At the ame time, they too prepare food for the New Year day: The whole family will then tay awake together to attend to the year(called hou ui). After haihi, zihi(11p.m. to 1a.m.)will come, and thi i the arrival of New Year(Yuandan). At thi moment, people begin the celebration with firework. Vegetarian and weet food will then be placed are the altar for offering, and incene be burned to welcome the deitie. In the ancient time, it wa believed that haihi connected the two year and thu wa called kaiui.

At the ame night, ome familie will follow the intruction in Tonghu and place preparing altar in the direction of the "fortune deity" during the "fortune time" to receive the deity. If the direction of the "fortune deity" i at the "ill poition", people will chooe to receive "happy deity" or "noble deity" intead.

2. There i an apparent difference in the cutom of food taking on Yuandan between the Chinee in the northern and outhern region. The northern Chinee ha the habit of taking jiao zi(dumpling made of flour with vegetable and meat wrapped inide). Some people may put a weet or a coin inide jiao zi, hoping to have a weet year after tating the weet and a wealthy year after tating the coin. on the other hand, the outhern Chinee have the taboo for killing on Yuandan. Therefore, they do not take meat in tee morning of Yuandan, o a to avoid bloodhed or mutual laughter. In order to evade mifortune, they have the firt meal of thi day without meat. Intead, they take vegetarian food for the ake of virtue.

3. What i pecial during the New Year i that parent or elder will ditribute red packet(ang pao or ya ui qian)to the children. People in the ancient time were more particular in giving away the red packet: the ditribution took place on the eve of New Year o that the kid could uppre the pat year and enter the New Year. Ya ui ha the meaning of overcoming the unpredictable future. Repreenting the wihe for the healthy pychological growth of the children, ya ui qian ymbolie the elder' hope to ee their children overcome all the unpredictable element brought by the "year".
